Surplus means what remains after other loads
Solar generation is not automatically available to the car. Household appliances and a home battery may already be using it. A surplus-aware charger needs suitable measurement and control to adjust charging around the remaining energy. Ask about smart EV charging as a complete system, not just an app feature.
A timer that runs at midday is not necessarily measuring surplus. It can import on a cloudy day or when other loads increase. The solar monitoring explainer clarifies generation, consumption and export so you can ask what the charger actually measures.
Compare the charging modes
| Concept | Typical aim | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Surplus-only | Wait or pause when sufficient spare solar is unavailable | The car may not receive enough energy before departure |
| Grid-assisted eco | Use surplus but supplement it to keep charging | Some electricity can still come from the grid |
| Scheduled or boost | Prioritise a time window or departure requirement | May override the solar-only preference |
A minimum charging rate creates a threshold
The cited myenergi guidance gives a manufacturer example of roughly 6 A minimum charging current: about 1.4 kW on one phase and 4.2 kW across three phases. These are explanatory approximations, not settings for every vehicle or charger. Confirm the Australian model, vehicle, firmware and supported phase behaviour with the supplier.
For a hypothetical single-phase system with a 1.4 kW threshold, 2 kW of solar generation minus 1 kW of household load leaves only 1 kW surplus. A grid-assisted mode might import the missing 0.4 kW; a surplus-only mode might wait. A sunny roof and a paused charger can therefore be consistent with normal operation.
Coordinate the car, home battery and supply limit
A battery and charger may each try to absorb export. Without coordinated priorities, the car could draw energy from the home battery or the devices may respond in ways the owner did not expect. Ask who gets surplus first, whether battery discharge to the car is permitted and how this is measured. The battery capacity and power guide explains why a home battery’s kWh alone does not settle the question.
Household load management is separate from solar optimisation. It helps manage charging against the assessed electrical supply constraints. The electrician must confirm the sensing arrangement, phase treatment and behaviour if communications fail. Do not change supply-limit settings yourself to make charging faster.
Test the user experience at handover
- Ask the installer to explain surplus-only, assisted and boost modes on the installed system.
- Confirm how car timers and charger timers interact.
- Record the departure target and what happens if solar is insufficient.
- Clarify whether phase switching is supported, automatic or unavailable.
- Ask how to recognise grid imports and battery discharge in the app.
The existing EV charger service remains the broader installation route. For multiple business vehicles, use the fleet duty-cycle planner rather than assuming all cars can wait for solar. Surplus charging can increase local solar use, but it is not literally cost-free: equipment costs and forgone export credits still exist.
